Why is proglumide rarely used

As the effect of proglumide in inhibiting gastric acid is not as effective as other drugs (such as omeprazole, ranitidine, etc.), it is rarely used in clinical practice nowadays.
1. Proglutamine is a kind of gastrin receptor antagonist, which can inhibit the secretion of gastric acid, and also has the effect of protecting and promoting the healing of gastric mucosa, and was commonly used in the treatment of peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis and other digestive disorders in the past.
2. However, compared with other acid-suppressing drugs (such as proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonists), its effect of inhibiting the secretion of gastric acid is weaker, so now it is rarely used to treat peptic ulcer.
3. Proglumide may occasionally cause insomnia, dry mouth, abdominal distension and other adverse reactions during administration. The drug is contraindicated in patients with complete obstruction of the cystic duct and biliary tract.
If you are suffering from digestive system diseases, whether it is suitable for the use of proglumide should be determined by a specialist doctor according to the disease and individual circumstances, do not blindly self-medication.
