The treatment of tension headache in children includes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.
1. Non-pharmacological treatment: EMG biofeedback combined with relaxation training and cognitive-behavioral therapy may be effective in children with tension headache. Acupuncture may be effective.
2. Pharmacologic treatment: Including medication at the onset of headache and prophylactic medication.
(1) Headache attack treatment: headache attack should be mainly analgesic, can use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as acetaminophen, aspirin and so on. If short-term medication is difficult to relieve, non-pharmacological treatment and preventive medication should be considered.
(2) Preventive medication: commonly used in patients with chronic tension headache. The most important drugs are tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline.
If children develop tension headache, they should be admitted to the hospital in time and treated according to the doctor’s prescription. The above medications should be used in accordance with medical advice.
