What is thrombocytopenia?

A variety of infections can cause thrombocytopenia, with viral infections being the most common, including measles, rubella, chickenpox, hepatitis, cytomegalovirus, influenza virus, etc. Recently, it has been found that infection with novel coronaviruses can also cause thrombocytopenia. In addition, some bacterial infections can also cause sepsis and thrombocytopenia. Treatment in this case should be focused on controlling the infection and platelets can usually recover after the infecting factor has been removed.
