Gray nails are onychomycosis, a disease caused by a fungal infection that patients must be aware of. Currently, there are some antifungal medications that are recommended for the treatment of onychomycosis, but these medications are not applied directly to the diseased nail, and they do not work to make the diseased nail fall off. If the patient is able to shed the nail after applying the medication, he or she may have used a medication with a corrosive effect, which is not recommended in the first place because it may cause damage to the surrounding normal skin tissue or to the nail tissue underneath. The actual nail is usually removed from the nail to ensure that the medication is effective, and the nail may fall off after the medication is applied.
