Taking escitalopram oxalate tablets may cause slowing of the heart rate of the person taking it, which is a rare adverse effect of this medicine. Escitalopram oxalate tablets are mainly used for the treatment of depression with or without panic disorder with agoraphobia. According to the drug insert for this medication suggests that patients taking this medication may experience cardiac adverse reactions, among them occasional tachycardia; rare bradycardia, in which the heart rate appears to slow down; and unknown prolongation of the QT interval on the electrocardiogram. If severe slowing of the heart rate occurs the drug should be suspended and the physician informed for management. Other possible adverse reactions include symptoms of upright hypotension, rhinitis, yawning, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite, weight gain, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, and dizziness. It is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the product; in combination with pimozide; in combination with selective or irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors. This product needs to be applied under the guidance of a specialist, and should not be used on its own resulting in exacerbation of the condition or serious adverse reactions.
