Intestinal obstruction in traditional Chinese medicine can belong to the category of abdominal pain, accumulation, Guan Ge, moxibustion has the health care effect of warming menstruation and dispersing cold, supporting the yang and fixing off (by replenishing yang qi to treat prolapse type of disease), eliminating blood stasis and dispersing knots, moxibustion has a complementary effect on the intestinal obstruction caused by cold stagnation of qi and deficiency of spleen and qi trapping.
For intestinal obstruction caused by cold stagnation and spleen deficiency, moxibustion can be applied to the middle epigastric region, Tianshu, and the upper Juhu points.
1. The epigastric region is located in the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 4 inches above the umbilicus. It has the effect of harmonizing the stomach and strengthening the spleen, and subduing rebelliousness and inducing diuresis. It is mainly used for treating stomachache, vomiting, eructation (hiccup), regurgitation, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, diarrhea and other conditions.
2. Tianshu is located in the abdomen, horizontally flat in the umbilicus, 2 inches aside from the anterior midline. It is effective in regulating Qi and relieving pain, promoting Blood circulation and dissipating blood stasis, and clearing dampness and heat. It is mainly used for treating abdominal pain, abdominal distension, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery and other diseases.
3. Upper Giant Hollow is on the anterior lateral side of the calf, 6 inches below the calf’s nose, one transverse finger from the anterior edge of the tibia, and is the lower conjunction point of the large intestine. It has the efficacy of harmonizing the intestines and stomach, and energizing the meridians and collaterals. It can mainly treat diarrhea, dysentery, bowel sounds, constipation and other conditions.
