Astragalus and Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong together have the effects of invigorating blood circulation, tonifying Qi and elevating Yang, inducing diuresis and subduing swelling.
Astragalus has the efficacy of tonifying Qi and elevating Yang, stopping sweating by consolidating the muscle surface, inducing diuresis to reduce swelling, and generating body fluid to nourish blood. Clinically, it is used in the treatment of symptoms such as qi deficiency, loose food (thin and unshaped feces), middle qi subsidence (deficiency of spleen and stomach qi, with manifestations such as visceral organs falling down), surface deficiency and spontaneous sweating (frequent and natural sweating due to the weakness of the muscular surface), and qi deficiency and edema.
Astragalus is contraindicated for those with solid symptoms and yin and Yang deficiency.
Rhizoma Chuanxiong has the efficacy of invigorating blood and promoting circulation of Qi, dispelling wind and relieving pain. It is clinically used in the treatment of chest paralysis (stuffy pain in the chest), heart pain, stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium (chest and ribs), swelling and pain in falling and thumping, irregular menstruation, menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain in the mass of the abdomen, headache, and rheumatism paralysis and pain, and so on.
Astragalus is contraindicated in people who have a deficiency of yin and fire, a deficiency in the upper and lower parts of the body (the upper part of the body manifests as headache, irritability, etc., while the lower part manifests as lumbago, frequent urination, etc.), and a weakening of the qi.
