Bird’s nest is a nest made of saliva and feathers mixed with mud and cemented by some swiftlets and barn swallows, which are placed on the cliffs, waiting for the saliva inside the nest to be dried up and then removed, and then processed and refined to produce ivory-white, delicate and dense bird’s nests.
Bird’s nests can be classified into White Bird’s Nest, Yellow Bird’s Nest and Blood Bird’s Nest according to their colors. White Bird’s Nests are built by Swiftlet’s feeding on insects, seaweeds, and other foods that are digested and spat with white saliva; Yellow Bird’s Nests are yellowish due to the air environment; and Blood Bird’s Nests are made of high mineral content in food consumed by Swiftlet, which leads to the blood-red color of the saliva.
There are very few bird’s nests in China, mostly relying on foreign imports, with the main production areas being Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. Those who are allergic to bird’s nest should not consume bird’s nest.
