What causes rib pain above the kidney area

Rib pain above the kidney area may be due to intercostal neuralgia, herpes zoster, fasciitis and other causes. 1. Intercostal neuralgia: It is a syndrome in which the intercostal nerves are damaged due to different reasons, and there is pain in the chest between the ribs or abdomen in the form of strips. It may be caused by thoracic spine lesion, trauma, spinal cord tumor of thoracic vertebral segment and so on. 2. Herpes zoster: It is a skin damage caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus latent in human body. Its clinical manifestation can be seen in the kidney area above the ribs or on one side of the body, appearing in clusters of blisters with band-like distribution, and accompanied by localized pain. 3. Fasciitis: it refers to the pathologic changes of fascia and causes various discomforts of myofascia of the body. When fasciitis occurs in the intercostal muscles, muscle stiffness or tension can occur, and there is much pain when moving or pressing.
