Complications after splenectomy

Complications after splenectomy include intra-abdominal hemorrhage, infection, thromboembolic disease, fever and so on. 1. Intra-abdominal hemorrhage: it is a serious complication after splenectomy and usually occurs 24-48 hours after surgery, mostly due to inaccurate or missed vascular ligation, resulting in hemorrhage of pancreatic caudal vessels, splenic blood vessels and traumatic oozing from the splenic bed. 2. Infection: Infection after splenectomy includes subphrenic abscess, lung infection, incision infection, etc. It is related to the decrease of immune function caused by splenectomy. 3. Thromboembolic disease: thrombocytosis is the body’s response after splenectomy, and platelets can rebound rapidly 24 hours after splenectomy, which is the high incidence of thrombosis. Thrombus most often embolizes the splenic vein stump to the superior mesenteric vein and portal vein. 4. Fever: Fever may occur after splenectomy, which usually lasts for 2 to 3 weeks, but the body temperature usually does not exceed 38.5-39℃. If uncomfortable symptoms after splenectomy, you should immediately consult a doctor to clarify the cause and standardize the treatment under the doctor’s guidance.
