What does mpv mean medically?

MPV refers to Mean Platelet Volume on medical test forms. Platelets are a component of blood, and they are shaped in the form of an oval or disc shape that is slightly concave on both sides. Platelets are the smallest of the blood components, much smaller compared to both red blood cells and white blood cells, and are derived from the shedding of cytoplasm from bone marrow megakaryocytes, which are formed from some of the fragments. Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is one of the items in our routine blood tests, and the clinical significance of MPV is a factor in determining thrombocytopenia based on changes in MPV size. Generally speaking, the mean platelet volume is often normal or increased due to infection and local inflammation; if thrombocytopenic patients caused by peripheral platelet destruction, the mean platelet volume will show an increase. In patients with thrombocytopenia caused by bone marrow lesions, the mean platelet volume will show reduced performance. Meanwhile, if the mean platelet volume and the number of platelets are proportional to each other and continue to decline, it may be a precursor of bone marrow failure, and the lower the MPV value, the more serious the bone marrow inhibition.
