Physiologically, gastroesophageal reflux can occur in small infants due to immature lower esophageal sphincter development or poor neuromuscular coordination. The age at which physiologic GERD disappears is usually around one year of age. In infants and young children, physiologic GERD often occurs between or after meals, also known as “milk overflow”. This is usually not a cause for concern and usually resolves naturally by the age of one year with no adverse effects. If GERD usually occurs during sleep, in the supine position, or on an empty stomach, and causes symptoms such as vomiting and other complications, then it is important to consider whether the reflux is pathologic and requires active treatment. If pathologic reflux occurs, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time for treatment with the help of a doctor.
