Breast milk jaundice persists at the breast and may not subside until 2-3 months at the latest. The specifics of each baby with breast milk jaundice can vary quite a bit. Most babies do not have severe cases and can continue breastfeeding under close monitoring. Some babies have severe jaundice and need to stop breastfeeding, otherwise serious jaundice-related illnesses may occur, such as kernicterus jaundice, which may affect the baby’s brain development, and some babies may even have convulsions as a result of jaundice, etc. Therefore, some babies have to stop breastfeeding and undergo blue-light therapy. Some babies can stop breastfeeding for a short period of time and resume breastfeeding after the total bilirubin has dropped significantly.
