What to do if your platelets are low

Low platelet count firstly needs to be diagnosed clearly, which is commonly found in aplastic anemia, primary immune thrombocytopenia, massive blood transfusion, etc., and be restored to normal through symptomatic treatment and medication under the guidance of doctor. 1. Aplastic anemia: low platelets caused by hematopoietic dysfunction. Androgens and hematopoietic growth factors can be used to promote hematopoiesis and increase the number of platelets; in severe cases, platelet receptor agonists such as Eltrombopag can be used. 2. Primary immune thrombocytopenia: glucocorticoid is the drug of choice for treating primary immune thrombocytopenia, which is mainly applied to platelet count <30×10/L and severe bleeding; splenectomy can be considered for those who are ineffective in glucocorticoid treatment. 3. Large amount of blood transfusion: large amount of blood storage input or input of large amount of plasma leads to blood dilution which may cause platelet lowering, platelet stimulating factor and other treatments can be applied. When the patient has low platelet, it is recommended to consult the doctor in time to find out the cause and standardize the treatment under the doctor’s guidance.
