A transvaginal ultrasound is an examination that is performed by placing a probe into the vagina. A transvaginal ultrasound, also known as a vaginal ultrasound, is performed through the vagina as the name suggests. There are three ways to perform a transvaginal ultrasound: transabdominal, transvaginal, and transrectal. Transvaginal ultrasound is better than transabdominal ultrasound and transrectal ultrasound is usually used for women who are not sexually active. Color ultrasound is used to examine structures such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes for specific lesions. Transvaginal ultrasound requires the patient to empty her bladder, lie on her back, spread her legs, and insert the probe into the vagina with a condom wrapped around it, which is usually painless and requires no undue worry or tension. Transvaginal ultrasound should be operated by a professional doctor, and any discomfort should be promptly diagnosed and treated.
