Dampness is a pathological condition in which dampness accumulates and stagnates due to the dysfunction of the spleen qi’s function of transporting and distributing water and fluids. Dampness is usually due to the spleen’s dysfunction of transportation.
Dampness stagnation between the meridians usually manifests as headache like wrapping, heavy limbs, neck straightness, and unfavorable flexion and extension; dampness committing the upper focal point, chest tightness and cough; dampness obstructing the middle focal point (dampness obstructing the function of the spleen and stomach), epigastric distension and fullness, loss of appetite, and greasy or sweet mouth; dampness obstructing the lower focal point, abdominal distension and loose stools (thin and unshapely stools), and unfavorable urination; and water-dampness committing overflow of the skin, oedema.
