Petit mal seizures refer to classic aphasic seizures, which are more common in childhood and most patients stop having seizures by adolescence. It is characterized by a sudden, brief loss of consciousness during daily life or while doing something, interruption of ongoing movements, dazed eyes, and a lack of response to calls, but usually no falls. It may be accompanied by simple automatisms, such as chewing and swallowing, and sometimes dropping something in the hand. The patient has no recollection of the seizure process after the seizure and can have several to hundreds of seizures per day. The duration of the seizure is within 5-10 seconds and the patient is awake immediately after the seizure without headache or dizziness.
