Cerumen is a product of the excretion of the cerumen gland in the cartilage of the external ear canal, and it is normal for everyone to have cerumen excretion in small flakes and small round shapes. In some cases, such as narrowing of the external ear canal or otitis externa, cerumen secretions cannot be excreted normally and accumulate in the external ear canal to form large cerumen blocking the external ear canal, resulting in cerumen embolism. In this case, the cerumen needs to be removed by methods such as hooking the cerumen, softening the cerumen with medication and then attracting it out, or flushing it out with saline.
