What’s wrong with swollen ankles and calves?

If the patient currently has edema in the ankles as well as the lower legs, the first step is to ask the patient if he or she is currently taking any specific medications. Patients who are currently taking glucocorticoids, or drugs like licorice, and calcium channel blockers can cause this abnormality. Calcium channel blockers are commonly used in clinical practice to lower blood pressure, and representative drugs include amlodipine and felodipine. Patients may also suffer from heart failure, renal insufficiency, or abnormal liver function. If the patient has lower limb edema along with dyspnea, shortness of breath, or wheezing, it is highly considered to be caused by heart failure. Patients are advised to have BNP and cardiac ultrasound checked if necessary to help further clarify the diagnosis. Patients are also advised to have their thyroid function checked again, as patients with hypothyroidism may also have this abnormal presentation.
