The vast majority of medication abortions are effective because the products of pregnancy are expelled between 2-6 hours after the administration of misoprostol, and in some cases 1 week after the administration of the medication. Clinically, some people have failed medical abortions using a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, and then 1 week later the embryo is still viable on ultrasound and primitive cardiac tube pulsation is present. This is a failure of medication abortion, and the next step is to have an abortion, either a painful abortion or a painless abortion, in order to terminate the pregnancy. The abortion is not 100% effective, individual will be a failure.
