What causes ear canal congestion

The causes of congestion in the external auditory canal or ear canal are generally two possibilities: 1) external stimulation, such as repeated ear digging, which leads to local congestion and edema; 2) infection of the external auditory canal, such as bacterial otitis externa or fungal otitis externa caused by ear digging, which can cause congestion and edema of the external auditory canal. In some cases, congestion can cause oozing of fluid from the external auditory canal, with mucous discharge or mucopurulent discharge. Most of the minor congestion in the external ear canal can be improved by avoiding further stimulation. If there is localized infection, specific medication should be used according to the specific situation.
