What kind of lumbar disc herniation has a lower recurrence rate after surgery

Having completed many cases of lumbar disc herniation, we have an impression that prolapsed or even free disc herniation is not easy to recur, and there are more cases of herniated type, and of course more recurrences and poorer outcomes. The following theoretical basis also confirms that this impression is correct. McGirt’s study found that the amount of disc removed was also related to the recurrence rate. The higher the volume removed, the lower the recurrence rate. Kim et al. analyzed the relationship between the type of lumbar disc herniation and the risk of postoperative recurrence and found that the incidence of RLDH was 15.9% in patients with herniated lumbar disc herniation and 3.7% in patients with prolapsed lumbar disc herniation, whereas no recurrence was seen in patients with free lumbar disc herniation during postoperative follow-up. Morgan-Hough et al. reported that 531 post-discectomy patients were followed up for 16 years and found that the risk of recurrence of herniated discs requiring secondary surgery was three times higher than that of prolapsed and free discs.
