The severity and prognosis of each type of tic disorder varies greatly, with transient tic disorder being the mildest and most common type. It may disappear on its own after a period of time, or it may recur, especially in times of stress, and rarely develops into chronic motor or vocal tic disorder or tic-obscura syndrome after a period of partial remission. Although the manifestations of tic disorder make many parents nervous, tic disorder does not progress to psychosis or make the child stupid. In most children, the severity, frequency and variability of symptoms decrease in adolescence or adulthood, and in some children, the tic symptoms may disappear completely.
