The basal follicles are the follicles that are found in both ovaries.
The basal follicle is also known as the primordial follicle. The basal follicles are found in both ovaries of a woman. The basal follicles are present in the female embryo and remain atretic until the onset of menstruation at puberty. After puberty, when the ovaries are fully developed, the follicles in both ovaries will gradually develop, mature and ovulate.
Although there are basal follicles in both ovaries, and a group of basal follicles develops in each menstrual cycle, only one basal follicle develops into a dominant follicle that matures, ruptures, and ovulates in each menstrual cycle.
Ovulation usually alternates between the two ovaries during each menstrual cycle, or one ovary may ovulate continuously.
