In general, the need for surgical treatment in patients with patent foramen ovale does not depend on the diameter, but rather on the patient’s medical history. Usually, patients with patent foramen ovale are not clinically significant and most often do not affect normal cardiopulmonary function. In patients with a history of stroke and a right-to-left atrial shunt, early treatment is usually required. Current surgical procedures include interventional closure and open-chest posterior patent foramen ovale closure. If there is no history of stroke, no specific treatment is usually required, but prompt medical attention is needed when uncomfortable symptoms occur. Patients with patent foramen ovale are advised to visit a specialized hospital if they experience any discomfort.
