Can lichen planus be cured?

Because the cause of lichen planus is not yet clear and there is no specific treatment, complete cure or eradication cannot be achieved, and the prognosis varies widely. For patients with milder disease, clinical cure can be achieved in a few weeks for a few people after removing the triggering factors and after standard treatment, but there is a possibility of recurrence. Some cases of cutaneous lichen planus may also gradually resolve on their own within two years, but some light brown pigmentation changes may remain. In addition, some patients may take decades to resolve spontaneously, and there is a certain possibility of recurrence and cancer. The treatment of lichen planus needs to be systematic and standardized according to medical prescriptions to avoid aggravation of symptoms. In acute generalized heavy patients, systematic use of glucocorticoids is preferred, and in stubborn cases, combination of retinoids, immunosuppressants, antibiotics and antimalarials can be used. Topical glucocorticoid preparations, retinoids, tacrolimus or pimecrolimus cream can be used in limited patients, and surgical treatment can also be used for stubborn, solitary or cancerous lesions. In addition, the patient should have a regular life, eliminate or reduce mental tension, avoid smoking, alcohol and stimulating food, stop using the drugs that cause the disease, pay attention to sun protection, maintain cleanliness and hygiene, etc., are conducive to promoting the clinical cure of the disease.
