Spleen enlargement of more than 5 ribcage units is usually not serious if it is purely splenomegaly without hypersplenism, and requires regular review. If it is combined with hypersplenism, it is more serious. Normal spleen size is usually no more than four ribcage units, and a spleen larger than five ribcage units is considered to be enlarged. If the spleen is simply enlarged and there is no hypersplenism, there is no need for treatment and regular checkups are sufficient. If the symptoms are combined with hypersplenism and decreased blood counts, splenectomy may be considered. The causes of splenomegaly can be divided into infectious and non-infectious factors, the former is mainly caused by acute and chronic infections, and the latter is mainly caused by bruises, blood diseases, connective tissue diseases, splenic tumors and splenic cysts. It is recommended to go to the hospital for further examination to clarify the cause of splenomegaly, so as to carry out reasonable treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
