An injury to the sciatic nerve may cause pain in the buttocks, lower and upper legs, and feet.
The sciatic nerve travels in the middle of the back of the buttocks and is divided into the tibial nerve and the common peroneal nerve. The tibial nerve and its branches travel to the back of the calf and the inside and outside of the sole of the foot, while the common peroneal nerve and its branches travel to the front of the calf and the front and outside of the back of the foot.
If the sciatic nerve is damaged, the pain is mainly centered on the buttocks, legs, and feet where it innervates. Depending on the degree of nerve damage, there will be different areas or degrees of pain, and in severe cases, it may also cause sensory loss in the area below the knee.
When the patient feels that the lower limb movement disorder may be related to the sciatic nerve, it is recommended to go to the hospital as soon as possible for a physical examination and imaging test, and under the guidance of the doctor to carry out the corresponding treatment to avoid deterioration.
