Refractory cough is a chronic cough that is difficult to diagnose and treat and has a poor therapeutic outcome, where the cause of the cough cannot be identified by following the existing cough diagnostic and treatment process, or where the cause is clearly identified but there is no effective treatment and lack of a favorable therapeutic response. Consistent with TCM theory, refractory cough can be effectively identified, but the cause of the cough is not clear, and treatment is limited to traditional Chinese medicine, which has poor therapeutic effects, and is therefore also known as intractable cough in TCM. Prolonged coughing is often considered to be the main symptom of intractable cough, for this type of patients can consider using traditional Chinese medicine for treatment. Clinically, it can be adjusted with medicines that have the ability to dissolve phlegm and stop coughing, such as Zhebeimu and almonds.
