What should I do if I have synovitis of the knee?

Patients should seek medical attention when they experience swelling, pain and limited movement of the knee. When symptoms are mild in the early stages, they can be observed for a while, with rest and avoidance of exertion; when symptoms do not improve or worsen, standardised treatment is required.
In the acute stage, patients can use crutches or canes to assist with movement and reduce weight bearing on the joints, while avoiding heavy activity. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs can quickly reduce or control symptoms, but should not be taken for long periods of time. Some patients with severe disease require surgery when conservative treatment is not effective.
