What are the pros and cons of pacemakers

The benefits of installing a pacemaker are that it can prevent and treat many kinds of arrhythmia, avoid the occurrence of malignant arrhythmia, and save the patient’s life; the disadvantages are that the cost is expensive, magnetic fields need to be avoided, and infections may occur.

1. Advantages: Cardiac pacing can elevate the heart rate of bradycardia, avoid dizziness and fainting caused by bradycardia, prevent tachyarrhythmia induced by severe bradycardia, and terminate ventricular malignant arrhythmia, as well as improve the symptoms of patients with heart failure, avoid sudden cardiac death, and save patients’ lives.

2. Disadvantages: ① pacemakers are expensive and require regular monitoring and battery replacement; ② need to stay away from magnetic fields, can not be close to places with strong magnetic fields, some non-anti-magnetic pacemakers can not do MRI; ③ need to cut the skin when installing pacemakers, which may cause wound infection.

There are certain criteria for installing a pacemaker, which include symptoms, ECG performance and many other conditions. Please follow the advice of your medical professional to avoid excessive medical treatment or delays.
