Is shingles treatable?

Herpes zoster is usually better treated. Herpes zoster is a disease caused by varicella zoster virus infection, which is self-limiting, and the principle of treatment is antiviral, pain relief, anti-inflammatory, and prevention of complications. 1. Antiviral drugs: early and sufficient antiviral treatment, especially for patients over 50 years old, is helpful to reduce neuralgia and shorten the course of the disease. Usually, antiviral treatment should be started within 48-72 hours after the onset of rash. Nucleoside antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, vasiclovir, or brivudine can be used. 2. Sedation and analgesia: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. diclofenac sodium) can be chosen for acute phase pain. Postherpetic neuralgia can choose gabapentin or pregabalin alone. 3. Glucocorticosteroids: early and rational application of glucocorticosteroids can inhibit the inflammatory process and shorten the duration of acute herpes-related pain, and oral prednisone can be given to elderly patients without contraindications. 4. Physical therapy: ultraviolet light, spectrum therapy device, infrared and other local irradiation, can promote the blisters to dry and crust, relieve pain. All of the above drugs should be used in accordance with medical advice. Patients with herpes zoster are advised to seek timely medical attention and standardized treatment under the guidance of a doctor to prevent the occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia.
