The rabies vaccine is administered after exposure, usually using the five-dose method. Then the time for the rabies vaccine to take effect is related to the time of the first injection. If the process of the five-dose method is followed, then most people are able to produce rabies virus-neutralizing antibodies in their blood seven days after the first rabies vaccine dose. When neutralizing antibodies are produced, the rabies vaccine is considered to have begun to work. The time to produce neutralizing antibodies is sometimes earlier, sometimes later, and seven days is the vast majority of cases. Some people may be later, but not later than 14 days. In people who have received the five-dose rabies vaccine, 100% of the people tested at fourteen days have produced neutralizing antibodies to rabies. Therefore, to ensure 100% effectiveness, the five-dose method of vaccination will ensure 100% production of rabies neutralizing antibodies at fourteen days and provide the appropriate protection.
