What is mugwort?

Mugwort is the dried leaves of Ai, a plant of the Asteraceae family, with the effect of warming menstruation and stopping bleeding (warming the human body’s meridians and stopping bleeding in the body), dispersing cold and relieving pain (relieving pain by dispelling cold in the body), and externally it can also dispel dampness and relieve itching. Mugwort leaves, bitter, pungent flavor, warm nature; a small poison. It belongs to the liver, spleen and kidney meridians. It is used in the treatment of hematemesis (vomiting of blood), epistaxis, metrorrhagia (excessive menstrual flow or more than a few drops), excessive menstrual flow, fetal leakage (a small amount of vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy), hyperemesis, cold pain in the lower abdomen, irregular menstrual cycles, cold uterus and infertility; and externally to treat itching of the skin. Vinegar moxa charcoal warms menstruation and stops bleeding, used for deficiency cold bleeding. Adverse reactions and contraindications of mugwort are not clear, and should be used with caution in cases of yin deficiency and blood heat. Drugs must be used under the guidance of a doctor.
