What’s with the premenstrual weight gain?

Weight gain before menstruation may be due to physiological factors such as changes in hormone levels before menstruation and improper diet, or it may be due to premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

1. Physiological factors: usually before the onset of menstruation, the level of estrogen secreted by the ovaries will be reduced, which may lead to water and sodium retention, which will lead to the patient’s weight gain. The poor dietary habits of women before menstruation, often eat high-calorie, high-fat food, resulting in fat accumulation, can also lead to weight gain, are normal physiological phenomena.

2. Premenstrual syndrome: the cause of this disease is still unclear, and is considered to be related to ovarian hormone imbalance, psychosocial, neurotransmitter abnormalities and other factors. Patients often experience breast swelling and pain, headache and back pain, abdominal fullness, weight gain and other symptoms, and some patients may also be accompanied by limb edema, loss of motor coordination. It may also manifest as inattention, memory loss, and agitation.

It is recommended that patients should not be overly worried when they experience weight gain before menstruation, but if it is premenstrual syndrome, treatment measures should be taken in accordance with the doctor’s instructions.
