What ligament injuries can be caused by ankle inversion?

Inversion of the ankle joint can easily cause injury to the lateral collateral ligament of the ankle joint, which mainly includes the anterior talofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament. The three ligaments mentioned above are usually relatively small, and they can easily be damaged and ruptured when inversion occurs, which will lead to localized pain, swelling, subcutaneous bruising and limitation of ankle joint movement, and so on. The patient is usually unable to walk with normal weight bearing or exercise. An MRI can confirm damage to the above ligaments, but a physical examination is still needed. Once a lateral ankle ligament injury has been diagnosed, treatment is determined by the extent of the injury. Partial injury can be immobilized with a brace or cast, but if it is completely torn, surgical repair should be considered to restore the continuity and integrity of the ligament and ensure the stability of the ankle joint in order to completely solve the clinical symptoms such as ankle pain and swelling.
