A hernia, commonly known as a small bowel pneumonia, is caused by a weakness in the abdominal wall that results in tissue protruding from the weakness in the abdominal cavity. The bulge is more pronounced during coughing, constipation or heavy lifting. Surgery is the only effective way to treat hernias.
