Relying on sleeping pills does not cure insomnia

Patients with chronic insomnia have the experience that despite taking various insomnia medications for more than a decade or even decades, and using all the sleep promotion methods they can find, they end up in a cycle of “insomnia – sleeping pills – failure and frustration”. Why is that? Insomnia is mainly a psychological disease, but people treat it like a physical disease (such as high blood pressure, bacterial infection, etc.), thinking that there is a mysterious drug in the world that, if taken, will restore the physiological state of sleeping peacefully forever. In fact, psychological diseases are much more complex than somatic diseases, and their treatment is relatively more complicated. Insomnia consists of two aspects: first, difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in maintaining sleep, early awakening and excessive dreaming; second, the existence of the dominant concept of excessive attention to sleep. The former can be solved by relying on sleeping pills, but for the latter sleeping pills are powerless, so the latter is the real cause of chronic insomnia. The excessive focus on sleep leads to “anticipatory anxiety” about sleep, also known as “insomnia phobia,” in which the thought of sleeping at night leads to fear and dread of the evening hours, and the preparation for sleep begins as soon as it gets dark. In fact, it is very difficult to achieve normal sleep with such a serious burden of thought. The second result of the advantageous concept of excessive attention to sleep is the increased alertness of the patient. All of this leads to the patient’s consciousness rapidly entering a fully awake state, making it difficult to fall asleep again. How to solve the dominant concept of insomnia patients overly concerned about sleep, mainly relies on the following two aspects, one is to actively seek psychological help, through a series of psychological counseling to get rid of the fear of insomnia; the second is the application of Chinese medicine treatment to help patients untie this “knot”, through a series of our research proved that this is one of the strong advantages of Chinese medicine treatment This is one of the powerful advantages of Chinese medicine in treating insomnia, not like sleeping pills that only work for a while. There is another kind of person who often complains about his poor sleep, which does not match the situation found by his surroundings, obviously people around him find that he is sleeping, sometimes even sleeping very deeply and making soft snoring sounds, but once he wakes up he strongly denies everything that just happened, claiming that he did not sleep, and insists on taking sleeping pills every night. “These patients have to rely on “multi-channel sleep EEG” to confirm the real situation of their sleep and then implement appropriate interventions.
