HFMD is mainly an infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. There are more than two dozen types of enteroviruses that can cause HFMD, which is usually of acute onset, and most of the affected children will develop a rash around 2-4 days, which is mainly located on the palms of the hands, the feet, the mouth, the buttocks, and the inner side of the thighs. Some patients may develop fever, but it is usually 38.5°C or less, and HFMD can recover on its own in about a week. The majority of children are mild and do not develop serious complications. Only 2% of children may develop severe forms of the disease, manifesting as meningitis, encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, and pulmonary edema.
