Lying ears are not stuffy when standing may be related to secretory otitis media, jugular vein bulboma, vertebral basilar artery blood supply insufficiency and other reasons.
1. Secretory otitis media: after the middle ear effusion caused by infection, tympanic membrane and dysfunction of the eustachian tube, the effusion can close the mouth of the Eustachian tube and prevent the opening of the Eustachian tube when standing, which leads to stuffy ears. When lying down, the fluid flows into the sinus of the tympanic cavity and mastoid process, revealing the opening of the Eustachian tube, or restoring the function of the Eustachian tube, and the stuffiness disappears.
2. Jugular vein bulboma: it is a kind of hemangioma-like tumor originated from chemoreceptors. It often manifests as unilateral pulsatile tinnitus and ear stuffiness, and the tinnitus is consistent with pulse. With the growth of the tumor, the tympanic opening of the Eustachian tube may be blocked due to gravity when standing, and the swelling may be restored to be smooth and not stuffy after lying down and tilting to the back and revealing the tympanic opening of the Eustachian tube.
3. Insufficient blood supply of vertebral basilar artery: some patients suffer from cervical spondylosis, atherosclerosis, cerebral vascular malformation and other diseases, which may lead to insufficient blood supply of vertebral basilar artery, thus affecting the blood supply of the inner ear. When standing, the blood flow is relatively insufficient to show the symptoms of ear stuffiness, and when lying down, the blood flow is relatively sufficient, the blood supply is improved, and the ear stuffiness is relieved.
If the ear is not stuffy when you are lying down and stuffy when you are standing up, you should consult a doctor for a systematic examination to clarify the diagnosis and the cause of the disease, and then actively treat the disease under the doctor’s guidance.
