What is childhood asthma?

Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways involving a variety of cells including inflammatory and structural cells of the airways (e.g., eosinophils, mast cells, T lymphocytes, neutrophils, and airway epithelial cells) and cellular components. This chronic inflammation leads to airway hyperresponsiveness and, when exposed to multiple irritants, airway obstruction and airflow restriction, with recurrent episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough, often occurring or worsening at night and/or early in the morning, with most children in remission with treatment or on their own.
