The calcaneal tubercle is an important structure of the heel bone and is located in the heel. The bony protrusion at the base of the heel is the calcaneal tubercle. The heel is often referred to as the heel bone and the skin and subcutaneous tissue on its surface. The heel bone is further categorized anatomically to include the calcaneal tuberosity, as well as the anterior portion of the heel bone, the tibial portion, the malleolus, and the talus. The calcaneal tuberosity is located in the posterior inferior plantar region of the heel. The main function of the calcaneal tuberosity is weight bearing during standing and impact resistance during exercise, so the calcaneal tuberosity is hard and generally not easily damaged. This important role of the heel tubercle in the body is supported by the fact that the bone density at the heel tubercle is stronger than in other parts of the body. When symptoms, such as pain, occur in the Achilles tuberosity area, it is important to seek medical attention and follow your doctor’s instructions for appropriate treatment.
