On the afternoon of June 26, the “Science Chinese (2014) Person of the Year Award Ceremony” was held in Beijing, organized by the magazine “Science Chinese” under the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST). At the ceremony, Dr. Chen Guoqiang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee and Director of Neurological Medical Center of the Aviation General Hospital, was honored as the “People of Science China” Person of the Year, which won the honor for the hospital. Dr. Chen Guoqiang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee, and Director of Neurological Medical Center, Airline General Hospital Dr. Chen Guoqiang, who graduated from the Neurosurgery Department of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University with a doctorate degree, is a renowned expert in functional minimally invasive neurosurgery and academic leader in China, and was elected for pioneering a number of first-in-the-country surgeries and new technologies. Chen is currently the only expert in China to use soft neuroendoscopy to treat various ventricular diseases, and is the first person in China to use soft ventricular endoscopy. He is the first in the world to initiate neuroendoscopic drilling and flushing for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (without placing drainage after the operation); the earliest in China to carry out stereotactic minimally invasive micro resection of functional brain areas and deep brain lesions, and invented the multifunctional stereotactic surgical system with independent intellectual property rights; and independently accomplished the total number of cases of microvascular decompression of microvascularization for the treatment of facial muscle spasm, and trigeminal neuralgia reaching more than 15,000 cases. At present, the annual operation volume exceeds 1,800 cases, and he is the expert with the largest operation volume, the highest operation efficacy and safety in treating these diseases at home and abroad. At the same time, Dr. Chen also serves as the vice president of the World Association of Pain Physicians China, the chairman of the Neurosurgery Committee of AVIC Medical, and other social positions, and has been committed to promoting the development of China’s neurological medicine for more than 30 years. The “Science Chinese Person of the Year” selection activity aims to reward scientific and technological workers who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s scientific and technological development, and at the same time, allow more scientists to come to the front of the stage, giving scientists the honor and respect they deserve. The activity started in 2002, and many outstanding scientists such as Qian Xuesen, Yuan Longping and Yang Zhenning have been honored. This year’s Person of the Year Award is based on the selection criteria of “influence, creativity, transformative power and sense of responsibility”, and has gone through five stages, including the call for candidates, nomination, public announcement of candidates on the network, evaluation by a third-party evaluation system, final examination by experts, and the award ceremony. In the end, a total of 146 scientists in 10 fields, including basic research, medicine and health, information technology and electronics, civil engineering, water conservancy and construction, were honored as People of the Year in Science (2014), and nearly 20 academicians participated in the award ceremony. A total of 18 scientists in the field of medicine and health were awarded, with only 4 from Beijing. Dr. Chen Guoqiang’s election enhances the influence of the aerospace medicine brand in the scientific community.
