Lactose intolerance may be associated with diarrhea. However, it varies from person to person, and a few patients consume a certain amount of dairy products without experiencing significant discomfort, or exhibit other symptoms such as vomiting and bloating.
Lactose intolerance is a condition in which a patient experiences vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and other uncomfortable symptoms after consuming lactose-containing dairy products.
Patients with lactose intolerance mostly suffer from incomplete digestion of lactose due to reduced, deficient or even absent lactase activity in the intestines. The osmolality in the intestines is elevated and the reabsorption of water in the intestines is weakened, leading to diarrhea.
Symptoms of lactose intolerance vary individually and are related to the type of dairy products eaten and the amount consumed. A small number of patients who consume a certain amount of dairy products do not experience significant discomfort.
Lactose intolerance is not the only cause of diarrhea, but also bacterial infections, irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal masses, parasitic infections, chronic enteritis and other diseases. Diarrhea can also be caused by a poor diet, irregular eating patterns, and exposure to cold.
It is advisable to consult a doctor about whether diarrhea is related to lactose intolerance.
