Putting the patient first

Academician Lai is an academician clinic every Monday morning, as students, we often have the honor to accompany the academician to the clinic, say accompanied in fact should be said to learn, because many patients to see the academician clinic are all over the country to come to the difficult and complicated diseases, in many hospitals have seen, and finally recommended to the academician clinic. There are many diseases that we have only learned in textbooks, but have never seen specific cases, so we can always learn a lot of knowledge by following the academician to the clinic, and for their own doubts, as long as they ask, the academician can always patiently give us the answer, but also to explain to the patient, for the patient’s problems are always explained very easy to understand, very patient, some problems patients often ask several times, sometimes As an accompanying person, we were a bit anxious, but the academician was still very patient. Therefore, we all feel that in the academician’s clinic, we can learn not only knowledge and academician’s exquisite medical skills, but also academician’s medical ethics of always “patient-oriented”. Academician will go to the clinic as long as there are no special circumstances on Monday morning. I clearly remember one weekend, the academician went to Beijing to participate in the review of the Wang Kuancheng Education Fund, the end of Sunday afternoon, but the night happened to be foggy, flight grounded, the academician for the next morning clinic, overnight train back from Beijing, more than 6:00 a.m. to Nanjing, after a short rest to work, which is our young people also a bit overwhelmed ah. I accompanied the academician to the clinic that day, and I was not aware of these circumstances at that time. It was the academician’s secretary, Associate Professor Tang Xingming, who pulled me to the office and quietly instructed me not to increase the number of patients except for those who had made appointments, so that the academician could finish the clinic early and come back to rest. I was very touched after hearing this, and I quietly told the patient’s family about this situation during the clinic, and the patient’s family was very touched. But the academician stopped me and said indifferently that everything is important to the patient, they have come a long way, it is not easy, must give them the best treatment plan, can not let them down ah. I am not very good at expressing myself and cannot fully describe my feelings at that time, but I know that my soul was deeply shaken and I always remember this situation. I think perhaps it is this kind of patient-oriented and patient-oriented medical ethics that has made the academician such a brilliant achievement. In the process of treating extra-intestinal fistula, he found that patients needed nutritional support and better means to control abdominal infection, so he pioneered the domestic nutritional support, invented the Lai’s double cannula, formed a series of programs for the treatment of extra-intestinal fistula, and edited two editions of the In the process of treating patients with short bowel syndrome, he researched the intestinal rehabilitation treatment program, and then pioneered the small bowel transplantation in China, completing the first human allogeneic small bowel transplantation in Asia, followed by the first combined liver and intestine transplantation in Asia. So on and so forth, I think the clue that runs through so many achievements of academicians is that everything is patient-oriented, and what the patient needs is what we doctors should do. Now academician Lai led our general surgery institute to win the first prize of national scientific and technological progress, let us sincerely feel proud of the academician, let us feel proud as a member of the institute, but I think we can not stay on the academician led us to achieve, but should inherit this academician all the patient-oriented, patient-oriented spirit, and carry it forward.
