What is a stellate ganglion block

A female patient had been plagued by migraine headaches for seven or eight years, and all kinds of tests were normal, but medication, injections, and rest did not work. After a tortuous treatment, with a try attitude, she went to the pain department of the hospital for stellate ganglion block. After several treatments she said with emotion, “I’ve never been so relaxed in all these years. Long-term headaches and insomnia, blood pressure fluctuates, the whole day restlessness, the examination found that one side of the cerebral blood flow is reduced, the planetary ganglion block after the night of sleep has improved significantly, the next morning he came to the hospital, asked for another shot. So, what’s the deal with stellate ganglion block? Perhaps people are not familiar with the fact that there are two systems of nerves in the human body. We can reach for things when we need to, we can lift our legs and walk, and people can move freely under the innervation of the motor nerves of the brain. But can we make the heart beat a little slower and the bowels move a little faster? No. It turns out that in addition to the brain to dominate the movement of the nervous system, there is a set of nervous system, not subject to the command of people’s ideology, it “does its own thing”, called the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nerve is in charge of the movement of people’s internal organs. When we exercise, it automatically makes the heart beat faster and transports more blood, and when we are cold, it makes the blood vessels contract to preserve heat. However, there are times when the autonomic nerve is out of control, such as when it causes the blood vessels to constrict continuously and the heart to beat faster, regardless of whether people need it or not, which manifests itself in headaches, insomnia, panic attacks, shortness of breath, dry stools, and general malaise. The stellate ganglion is located on both sides of a person’s neck and is named stellate ganglion because it is shaped like a star. It belongs to the sympathetic chain of autonomic nerves and is mainly formed by the fusion of the 7th and 8th sympathetic ganglia and the 1st thoracic sympathetic ganglia, which are the main sympathetic ganglia that innervate the head, face, neck, upper thorax and upper limbs. More than 100 years ago, there are two surgeons in a tumor patient surgery inadvertently damaged the stellate ganglion, as a result, the unexpected happened: after the operation of the tumor patient’s pain is significantly reduced, the whole body condition improved. This phenomenon attracted the attention of medical doctors, who began to use the method of cutting off this nerve to treat the disease. Later, instead of surgical cutting, drug injection was used, which is stellate ganglion block. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) can block sympathetic preganglionic and postganglionic fibers, so these sympathetic ganglion innervation of cardiovascular movement, glandular secretion, muscle tone, bronchial contraction and transmission of nociceptive nerve fibers are blocked, so as to improve the sympathetic over-excitement caused by the circulatory disorders, nociceptive allergy, abnormal sweating and so on. Therefore, its clinical indications are quite wide, such as: herpes zoster, burning pain, hyperhidrosis, headache, cerebral vasospasm, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral infarction, peripheral facial nerve paresthesia, trigeminal neuralgia, allergic rhinitis, optic neuritis, corneal ulcers, sudden deafness, tinnitus, vertigo, periapical inflammation, cervical spondylosis, chronic constipation, phantom limb pain, indeterminate stigmata syndrome and so on. After decades of research and study, the therapeutic scope of stellate ganglion block is becoming more and more extensive, and the therapeutic effect is more and more precise. In developed countries, SGB accounts for 50% to 80% of all nerve blocks in Japan, but it has not been carried out popularly in China for a long time. The most critical problem is that the stellate ganglion block is a special part of the body, which requires a very skilled doctor to operate, and the concern about complications also makes some doctors or patients reluctant to perform SGB, thus hindering the promotion and development of SGB. However, due to medical needs, in recent years, stellate ganglion block technology has begun to become increasingly popular in China’s large hospitals, using stellate ganglion block to treat more and more diseases, such as the more common diseases: migraine, tension headache, cerebrovascular disease, cervical spondylosis, postherpetic herpes pain, cardiac neuroses and so on, with this method of treatment have a certain degree of efficacy. We believe that the use of stellate ganglion block, a practical treatment technique, will allow more people to get rid of diseases and improve the quality of life.
