Women should have regular breast examinations

Every October is the “Pink Ribbon Month”, yesterday, Guangxi Medical University Cancer Hospital held the “Care for breast, care for yourself, care for your family” patient fellowship. The doctor appealed to the majority of female friends, breast is “disaster-prone place”, should be its regular checkup. It may not occur to anyone that breastfeeding can be related to breast cancer. Dr. Qin Qinghong, a doctor in the second ward of breast surgery of the Cancer Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, has seen such a patient. Wu Li (pseudonym), 27 years old, was a teacher in a middle school in Nanning and became a mother in 2012. After giving birth to her baby, she was unwilling to breastfeed herself no matter how her family persuaded her. When her baby was 8 months old, a lump appeared in her breast; after that, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the hospital. This result was like a bolt from the blue and made Wu Li regretful. In the end, she had to undergo breast-conserving surgery, but fortunately, the treatment was effective and no recurrence so far. Qin Qinghong explained that after pregnancy, women’s body hormones change and a large amount of estrogen cannot be discharged, which easily leads to breast enlargement and eventually deteriorates into breast cancer. Many women are reluctant to breastfeed their children in order to maintain the shape of their breasts, which results in high hormone concentration stimulating the breasts. Of course not all women who do not breastfeed will get breast cancer, but there is scientific evidence that women who do not breastfeed have a higher risk of developing breast cancer and a much higher degree of malignancy than normal people. ”High work pressure, early development, less outdoor activities, poorly matched recipes and changes in lifestyle may all be reasons for the increase in breast cancer patients.” Qin Qin Qinghong said. 13-year-old junior high school student’s life was taken by breast cancer Data from the 2012 National Tumor Registry Annual Report showed that the incidence rate of female breast cancer in tumor registration areas was 42.55/100,000 and the mortality rate was 10.24/100,000, both of which were higher in urban than rural areas. According to statistics, the incidence of female breast cancer in China is increasing year by year, and compared with European and American countries, the incidence of patients in China is showing an increasingly younger trend, with nearly 40% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer between the ages of 40 and 45. ”From what we have seen in our hospital, the incidence is comparable to this level.” Speaking of the development characteristics of breast cancer in recent years, Qin Qinghong said without worry, “Patients are getting younger and younger.” In the clinical consultation, there are often female college students aged 20-30 or unmarried women who have just joined the workforce and are found to have breast cancer. In 2009, 13-year-old Xiao Su (a pseudonym), who had just started middle school, unintentionally found a lump in her left breast and thought it was breast development. It was only when Su’s left breast swelled up to 10 cm and she was sent to the hospital that the breast cancer had metastasized to her whole body and could only be treated with chemotherapy. Unfortunately, three months later, Su passed away. In yesterday’s event, a bright and cheerful sister caught the reporter’s attention, calling herself “Sister LuLu” with a northern accent, talking with a fierce smile, she really could not see that she was a breast cancer patient. In 2011, a hard lump appeared in her breast and her doctor advised her to have regular checkups, but she did not do so. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she went to the hospital for a checkup before the Spring Festival in 2013. On February 25 of this year, “LuLu” underwent a mastectomy, and until July 15, she received a total of six times of chemotherapy, successfully completing the entire treatment process. In this struggle with the nightmare, “LuLu” always kept smiling, and changed her bad habits to face life bravely. Mo Qinguo, director of breast surgery of the Cancer Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, told reporters that many patients fall into the plight of physical and mental pain when they have breast cancer. Clinical treatment is only the first victory of the battle, and the subsequent physical and psychological recovery is even more difficult and long. “Sister LuLu is a very positive example, and I hope more people will be like her. Regular medical checkups can detect “cancer seedlings” early. “As with most diseases, early detection and treatment, medical screening is the most fundamental means.” Mo Chinguo said that shyness and fear of cancer, as well as the concept of “local treatment”, are obstacles to early detection and treatment of breast cancer for many women. The first step in the screening process is a clinical examination, and only after a suspicious lump is found on the physical examination will a mammogram and ultrasound be performed. Among the inpatients in this hospital, most of them come to the doctor only after the symptoms are very obvious, and some of them are already in advanced stage, and the treatment is much worse than early detection. In fact, more than 90% of stage I breast cancer can be cured, while stage II and III are less effective and the cure rate drops to about 70% and 50%, while in situ cancer is almost 100% curable. Doctors remind that women should not only master certain scientific knowledge about breast diseases, but also insist on monthly self-examination and professional breast examination every 1-2 years.
