Statins are currently the first-line treatment option for lipid-lowering drugs, mainly for the treatment of patients with hyperlipidemia with predominantly elevated cholesterol. The main mechanism of action is selective competitive inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, which also increases the number of LDL receptors on the surface of the liver, thereby assisting in cholesterol reduction. Statins are currently indicated for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia of pure subtype, as well as for patients with high-risk cardiovascular diseases. For patients with coronary heart disease, previous stroke or myocardial infarction, additional statins are recommended for plaque stabilization and lipid regulation. At present, clinical trials have shown that long-term oral statins have a certain effect on plaque reduction. Patients with high-risk risk factors, hyperlipidemia and the presence of cardiovascular disease are recommended to take long-term oral use if there are no contraindications.
