Correctly taking Yin-nourishing and fire-removing medicines generally does not harm the spleen and stomach, but if long-term or large amounts of Yin-nourishing and fire-removing medicines are used, the spleen and stomach may be damaged. Commonly used medicines to nourish yin and remove fire include Radix Panax Ginseng, Dendrobium, Maitong and so on. Radix Panax Ginseng is often used for prolonged cough with deficiency of yin, dry cough with little sputum, paralysis of throat with deficiency heat (redness, swelling and pain in the throat, or dryness, foreign body sensation, or itchy throat with difficulty in swallowing), and thirst with injury of fluids, etc. It is not recommended for wind-cold cough. Wind-cold cough is prohibited. Dendrobium is used for heat illness with fluid injury, dry mouth and thirst, gastric yin deficiency (deficiency of yin fluid in the stomach), dry vomiting with little food, non-resolving of deficiency heat after illness, and yin deficiency with fire. It is forbidden to be taken by patients who have not been injured by yin in the early stage of warm-heat disease, or by patients who have not been dry in damp-warm disease (warm disease caused by feeling dampness and heat). Ophiopogon is used for the treatment of lung dryness and dry cough, paralysis of the throat and sore throat, thirst due to injury of fluid, thirst due to internal heat (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as eating, drinking, urinating, etc.), and insomnia due to heartburn. It is not recommended for patients with spleen deficiency (loose stools), phlegm in the lungs and stomach (pathological products of impaired water metabolism), or dampness and turbidity. If there is any discomfort, it is recommended to consult a doctor promptly. If medication is needed, it should be diagnosed by a doctor and regulated according to the doctor’s instructions.
