Teenager’s giant heart tumor successfully removed

Hou, a 10-year-old boy from Shandong, should have been a carefree age, but the sudden onset of chest discomfort a month ago changed the life of the child and his parents dramatically. The child was forced to leave school and his parents were worried. The local hospital referred the child to the provincial hospital but still could not give a clear diagnosis and specific treatment plan. The child’s parents came to our hospital with hope and were admitted to our cardiac surgery department. After admission, the doctor performed a detailed physical examination, chest CT, magnetic resonance imaging, puncture biopsy and other examinations, and made a clear diagnosis: giant lipoma of the heart. Because the tumor was particularly large, closely related to the heart and involved the coronary vessels and other important structures, the cardiovascular surgery department discussed this special case and made a detailed surgical plan, and after adequate preoperative preparation, on June 25, 2014, Deputy Director Ren Chonglei was in charge of the operation and Deputy Director Jiang Shengli guided the child to successfully perform the resection of the giant cardiac lipoma. The largest tumor removed was 15 cm in diameter and weighed 600 grams, which was more than three times the weight of the child’s own heart, a rare report at home and abroad. The child was discharged from the hospital 1 week after the surgery. At the time of discharge, the child’s parents’ foreheads were stretched and a long-lost smile appeared on their faces, and the handsome boy was able to return to the school to which he aspired.
